Captain’s
Report – Steve Boswell, 7th December 2011
The membership in 2011 was a little down on last year which was
to be expected given the ever increasing demands on work and a
number of people leaving the company. Although we lost some long
standing members, I was particularly pleased that we were still
able to welcome a number of new members this year.
Once again we had a very successful year of events both internal
to the society and external matches. Starting with the Spring
event in Ely and finishing with the Autumn event in Colne Valley.
Unfortunately whilst successful, both these events and many of
the other events throughout the year, the numbers had declined
and in some external matches it was difficult to raise teams.
This appears to be the result of the current climate we’re
in and hence we will be looking at strategies to improve on this
next year. In spite of this, match captains persevered to arrange
teams and still organise excellent events. So even more so than
usual special thanks and recognition need to go to all committee
members who organised and managed to balance the budgets for these
events.
The Two Day Away event was once again a great success. The “Battle
of Stamford Bridge” between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings
took place at Hanbury Manor, with two teams of 10 players each,
which included 4 rookies in total. I’ve had a lot of excellent
feedback from people about a thoroughly enjoyable event and superb
venue. Thank you to Stephen Stokes for taking over the organising
of the event quite late in the year to allow it to still go ahead.
He did a great job despite choosing a date that I personally could
not attend (drastic measures to avoid dropping me from his team).
Congratulations to Erik Hansen and his Viking team for winning
a very close fought battle (8-7) taking the Trophy from the Saxons.
The
Golf Lessons continued this year with 3 x 1 hour group sessions
in the Spring; a 2 hour playing lesson in the Summer; and another
3 x1 hour session including a video lesson in the Autumn. Once
again providing our members with excellent opportunities to improve
their game at very low cost. We also arranged a golf fitness session
this year provided by a local physiotherapist. Unfortunately there
was quite a low take up on all the learning activities this year,
which perhaps needs a rethink about the approach for next year.
Finally, I would like to thank the Committee members for their
continued dedication, hard work and support. Without you we would
not have a Golf Society. It is becoming more and more difficult
to find time in our schedules to meet for Committee meetings every
month, and even harder to commit to events when we have to balance
Golf against ever increasing work commitments. I am pleased that
we have managed to do so successfully for another year and have
every confidence we can continue to do so next year.
Finally I wish Simon Mahoney every success as Captain next year.

Treasurer's report - Jon Hopkins
We finished
the year with 42 paying members and 5 life members, which is
four lower than last year. I appreciate the efforts of the Captains
of the day to return match accounts, cheques and receipts promptly
which has helped keep the accounts ticking over although there
has been an interesting variety of ways of providing the accounts
which has kept myself and the Auditor busy for a while.
We currently
have £1,633 in the bank account, which is down by an apparent
£193 on the year and there is a potential additional £56
of refunds which are currently held in the account. Again we
have focussed this year’s ATLAS funding on training events
which has allowed us to successfully trial a golf fitness session
in addition to the regular lessons and on-course sessions. These
have been less well attended with 30 attendances this year for
the Spring/Summer/Autumn lessons against 43 last year. This
has meant that the training events have taken £935 of
subsidy on their own and despite securing an increased ATLAS
grant this year we have had to additionally subsidise these
events from club funds. We will need to get more people along
to these events to make them sustainable.
I would
finally like to thank Bob Spillett for once again passing his
keen eye over the BTRGS accounts to perform the audit which
he has been doing for many years now.
