Match Report
BT v Suffolk Police, 8/9/2000
This match had been resurrected after a number of years absence. The date for
this year's match was 8th September, the venue being Ufford Park. The format
of the event was 4BBB, ¾ handicap and Hambro scoring. There were problems in
getting people to play in the match as circumstances had changed since electing
to play earlier in the year. However, a full complement was achieved, with particular
thanks to Neil Harris who joined at the eleventh hour.
Ufford Park was disappointing. They had put up the cost of a round from the
expected £18 to £25, and as the Police did not have any members of the club,
all but two of them paid the full amount. Also, they put another society out
directly before us, so we were significantly held up all the way round, even
though we had booked the event 6 months ago. It was expected that we would all
return to the Bar afterwards for a meal, however Ufford Park had not laid on
the staff required to meet the numbers (although being reminded several times
during the months preceding the match). So it was a little disappointing that
the normal formalities could not be carried out.
There were periods of brilliance shown by the BT team, including a "baseball"
shot from Jon Hopkins out of a bush on the third hole. Both teams enjoyed the
match (and banter) and it was agreed between the Captains that the event should
continue next year. As BT effectively set the location of this years match it
was agreed that further matches should take the form of a home and away format,
with next years being selected by the Police.
Many thanks to all the participants who supported this event and I look forward
to seeing you all in future events.
