Match Report
2000 Spring Meeting
Date - May 15th 2000
Venue – Barnham Broom
Attendance – 48
Weather – Sunny temp 21-25 deg C
The largest attendance in living memory (but I’m sure Dave Shumake could remember
one), competed for honors in the first of this years premier tour events.
With the first tee time at 07.30 I arrived with Professor South at 06.45. Some
of our older members were so excited they arrived at 06.00. My weather prediction
proved correct (Could be a future career opportunity) with warm and sunny periods
throughout most of the day. Even the late afternoon rumble of thunder passed
us by.
On the picturesque Valley course for the morning singles proved tough for both
handicap categories. The greens were true but the thick meadow grass off the
fairways made it essential not to drift off line. Even society starlet George
Courtney struggled to play to his handicap. Peter Noble in his first outing
notched up a tremendous score of 39 to win the low handicap section, and at
long last Keith Brodrick was finally caught out by the high handicappers who
allowed him to win their section and finally get Keith cut to a more realistic
level. Alan Egan posted the lowest gross with 81.
The afternoon four balls were contested out on the slightly more forgiving
Hill course. Many local rivalries were fought including the Concert 4BBB world
championship, narrowly won by Carlaw & Cunningham and the BTRGS Old Captains
Twilight Years Trophy won by Hamer & Shumake. Maurice McQuitty and Mick
Day with 46 points won the BIG prize of the afternoon. A pair brought together
by fate.
A swim and Jacuzzi rounded off the day for the early finishers although most
chose to drink and be merry. The evening meal was one of the best prepared and
organized I have ever seen. Kudos to Barnham Broom
I sincerely hope all who attended enjoyed the day and look forward to meeting
many of you at the Autumn meeting, to be held at Ipswich Golf Club on the 18th
September. Invitations will be sent out early July.
Best Regards
Stephen Stokes
