Match Report
Captain v Vice Captain, 27/5/2002
Captain wins in wind
I recalled the words of the late and great Sam Snead, "I'm only scared
of three things - lightning, a side-hill putt, and Baard Grindberg" (well
he actually said Ben Hogan, but he'd have said Baard if he knew him!). And this
was true as he led his team to a convincing victory.
It had been a wet year, but on this day the weather was bright and the course
conditions were good. There was a strong wind that caused many a player to hit
wayward shots and loose their golf balls in the fields or water - and that included
a Felixstowe member! Although a nine-hole, the Kingsfleet course at Felixstowe
was very demanding and a challenge to us all - was that stoke index right? It
matters little, for they all felt hard to me!
We awaited the results anxiously in the nearby Old Queen Victoria PH as the
groups joined us one by one. First it seemed the Captain's team were going to
give us a hiding, then we took the lead and things were looking good for me,
but the last two groups returned wins for the Captain, resulting in an overall
win for the Captain's team by six holes.
Thanks to all the members that took part in what turned out to be a very enjoyable
evening's golf, finished off with a nice meal in the clubhouse.
