Mid summer event, 31/7/2002

The first BTRGS Mid Summer Meeting was held at Ufford Park Golf Club, and proved to be a great success that hopefully will become a fixed competition in the annual fixture list.

The turn-up was excellent, with 30 players attending the event. 2 people dropped out in the last minute, which unfortunately caused 2 three-balls.

The weather forecast was warm, wet and with possibilities of thunderstorms, but as the first group teed off the sun made its appearance and it stayed brilliant until the last group putted out on the 18^th. The course played very well, although it was very hard and dry many places. The greens did however seem to catch the balls well, hence the good scores all round.

The competition was played in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with 6 teams of 4 players plus 2 teams of 3 players going out together. The team gathered a total score where the two best Stableford-scores in each team on each hole counted. In addition to the main competition there were also the challenges of "longest drive", "closest to the pin" and "second shot closest to the pin".

There were many excellent scores, and it was very close at the top. The winning team, with a score of 91 points were: David Bell, Trevor Buck, Jon Hopkins and Andy Moore, with Andy’s eagle 3 on the par five 7^th hole. Well done Andy.

The second place was won by: David Clark, Steven Bedford, Melvin Markham and Erik Hansen with a score of 90 points. Thanks to Steven for a brilliant round of 44 points, which I am sure will see his handicap improve with a few shots. Well done Steven.

The longest drive was won by Jon Hopkins. The closest to the pin was won by Erik Hansen. Closest to the pin on the second shot was won by Mark McCormack. – After having driven the 16^th green, his second shot was with the putter! Well done Mark.

Finally I must thank Bob Tidy and the catering staff at Ufford Park for organising and providing a nice meal after a successful day of golf.
