2002 Spring meeting

A record-breaking field turned out on a beautiful day to play on a course in
first class condition. The large greens were true but had some dressing that
the ball picked up, especially in the morning when the dew was still there.
The conditions were all over good for a day out on a very good course, so no
excuses for not scoring well!
Our first group left at 0900 as the captain arrived. Some players
arrived in very good time, and the
usual suspects just made it for their tee off. The morning round was played
as 4BBB Stableford, where 2/3 of the pairs made 36 or more points. We had some
last minutes drop out, and most notable the representatives from both of our
sponsors. This meant an uneven number of pairs, where Stephen Stokes and Colin
South were sporty enough to go on their own.
The course had some very interesting and somewhat 'different' holes. Most notably
the 5th, with a ditch on the left as well as one down the middle of the fairway
in the playing direction. I examined the left ditch twice, while I saw others
testing both ditches thoroughly on the way to the green. The short par 4 8th
provided a good positional challenge on the tee shot, as the green was near
fully blocked by two huge trees.
The pace of play was good, and everyone got enough time to both eat and drink.
The Norfolk provided a nice lunch, which must have given some of the players
lots of energy. The longest drive got longer and the afternoon scoring for some
players was very high. Peter Noble with a round of 80 from a handicap of 17
took a clear win in the low handicap section. Tim Lennard-Jones took an equally
clear win with his round of 83 from a handicap of 18, which gave him 43 points.

Our evening meal was very well received and the service was excellent throughout
our day. Our sponsors, Ericsson and Computacenter, was very sorry that they
could not send a representative to attend. Conformance Standards Ltd represented
by Roger Stinton presented a golf bag to the winner of the low handicap singles
competion.
I really enjoyed the day and hope everyone else did too. We now look forward
to the Autumn Meeting to be held on 5th September 2002 at Rushmere. Invitations
will be sent out late June. To shorten the wait, we have introduced a Summer
Eve Meeting. This new event is an 18-hole team competition at Ufford Park on
the 31st July 2002.
