Match Report

BT v Ex-BT, 24/7/2002

Firstly, I would like to thank all that attended, in particular, Andrew Wright, who stepped in at the last minute to make up the team. I hope you all enjoyed the evening.

This year’s venue for the BT vs. XBT match was Ufford Park and is the 7th year this match has been played, with the first match being played at Ufford Park back in 1995. The hospitality shown was once again excellent, with the meal of fish and chips laid on afterwards. I would like to thank both the bar and kitchen staff for the catering and in particular I'd like to thank the Secretary, Bob Tidy, for his help with the arrangements.

The course played well and the view was that the greens were running true and consistent, which gave me no excuses for my poor putting. This is an event which is always enjoyable to play in, with the opportunity to meet and chat with friends and colleagues from (can I say this) the old days. And, as always they gave us a closely fought match. This year, due to the pressures of fading light, it was decided to play Match play, without Hambro scoring. The result was a win to BT by 5 matches. A great result, which hopefully has broken the winning roll that the XBT team has had for the last 3 years. We shall have to wait until next year to find out.

The evening finished off with a presentation, of a lead crystal vase, to John Hill by George Courtney (ex-Capt.) on behalf of the Society, for his many years of service to the BTRGS. This year, after 34 years, John decided to step down from the committee. He has filled many roles whilst on the committee, from Treasurer to Captain. John was involved with the Society’s conception, back in 1972, and rounded the evening off with some stories from the Society’s early days.

Many thanks to all the participants who supported this event and I look forward to seeing you all in future events.
