Match Report

BT v Legal & General, Crondon Park, 11/8/2004

This match was extended from eight to twelve a side for the first time this year. The match is a bit different as we meet half way between the two societies head quarters. It may have been marginally closer from Ipswich than from Surry this time.

The weather was very good to us in a week that saw much rain. We had sunny spells and no water from above.

The golf course design was good, with plenty of separation between the holes. The overall appearance of the course may have been better. The greens rolled true, if you managed to hit the ball hard enough to get a roll. For the low handicappers, the distance was not too much of a challenge, as we were forced to play off the blue tees - not too far in front of the normal yellows, but quite a bit ahead of the blacks (a mere 300 yards ahead of the "tiger" tee on the last).

The match was very close. Won by BTRGS only by one hole (after 108 played) on "Hambro" scoring. Nevertheless, most talk in the bar was focused on the efforts of the "Closest to the hole" winner - Jeff Deslandes. He managed an ace:
Hole in One, which of course won him the hole and the team the match. All the team congratulates and offer thanks for winning the match and for the drinks.

Tim and Tony were the other stars of the team with a 4 up win, a very solid pairing. Trevor played very well and helped the captain of the day to come in with a respectable 3 up. Trevor is however put under close observation by the handicap secretary.

A special thank you to Stuart who was very helpful and came in to the team on short notice.

The opposing team were all steady golfers, probably with a lower average HCP than us. As always we had a good laugh throughout the day. The 3-course meal was very nice.

We had some last minute changes to the menu choice and cost of the match. This was because the captain of the day had phoned up the wrong golf club to change menu options and confirm the number of players. A lot of stick was given - with a smile. Thank you.
