The team arrived to a fine day on the coast with a bit of a breeze helping everyone get their first drive of the day away. Felixstowe Ferry Golf Course was in good condition considering the amount of work going on to incorporate the rework the course with new greens, tees and fairways being constructed. The new greens looked impressive from a distance with huge slopes and elegant bunkering.
For the competition, a new format of modified St Andrews Greensomes was tried. This format results in the best drive of the pair being chosen and both players playing their ball out from there. Strokes were given as per a Four Ball Better Ball format. (Though this may be altered for next year).
As the SCCGS had had a few late calloffs Baard Grindberg turned out for them as did the Felixstowe Ferry starter. Thanks go to them for making the match possible for everyone.
BTRGS played extremely well with the higher handicappers taking advantage of some impressive driving by their playing partners, as the play progressed to the last 6 holes or so the weather turned and the rain came down, however, the BTRGS team kept their games going and eventually ran out winners 5½ to ½. Baard helping the SCCGS team to their ½ match! There were some big wins with Simon Mahoney and Richard Gilman winning 7&6 and Kerry Timms and Martin Beauchamp surpassing that with a 8&6 triumph.
The matches were played in good spirit and an excellent meal was enjoyed by all in the clubhouse following the matches. SCCGS had purchased a trophy for this and future matches and it was agreed to call this the “Summer Challenge Cup”. Craig Derry the SCCGS captain presented the trophy to David Bell for BTRGS.
