2004 Spring meeting

Date - 13th May 2004
Venue – Hintlesham Hall
Attendance – 56
Weather – Occasional heavy showers and strong wind

The spring meeting this year was held on the 13th of May at Hintlesham Hall Golf Club. The field counted an all time high of 56 players, of which 54 were members of the society, 2 represented St Audrey's and 2 players representing our Sponsors - Partners in IT and CompelSolve both HP System integrators.

We were welcomed with excellent weather for golf - with a sunny morning and lightly cloudy in the afternoon, and a light but changing wind.

The golf course was in very good condition. The course is open, but the rough, which had not been cut for a week, was very punishing so it paid off to stay on the fairways. The greens were not particularly fast but they were true, which was reflected by high scoring and many birdies throughout the day.

Due to the high number of players we had to start off from 2 tees, the 1st and the 9th. This caused some sleepless nights for the captain prior to the event, as the 9th tee was a good 10-minute walk from the clubhouse. This did however not seem to be a big problem on the day as everyone were well prepared and met up in good time before tee-off. Overall the pace of the round for the last pairings was slow, and the final groups took 4.5 hours to get around the course. This is unfortunate but also not surprising considering such a big field, many players of different capabilities, and of course some very thick rough where balls were "swallowed" even in the semi-rough.

After the morning's 4-ball better ball competition, the now traditional spring meeting lunch-time meal consisting of ham egg and chips was served as the players came. It was then time to recharge batteries and get ready for the afternoon's singles competition.

In the evening we were served an excellent meal and this was followed by the presentation of prizes for all the winners of the day as well as the knockout competitions.

Thanks to our sponsors HP, and the HP Openview integrators Partners in IT and CompelSolve, the prize table was very impressive. The 4BBB competition was very close as 3 teams ended up with 46 points. The winners had to be decided on count-back and it was Andy Moore and Steve Boswell who took home medals and an HP digital camera each for winning the 4BBB competition. The singles low handicap competition was won on countback by by Andrew Wright. Dominic Nash won the high handicap singles competition with 42 points). Both winners took home medals and lob-wedges. Stephen Stokes won the closest to the pin competition took home an HP iPac personal organiser to mention a few.

The complete result list is available here.

It was a great experience to see so many people enjoying themselves, and I truly enjoyed my role as the captain. Thanks again to everyone for taking par, thanks to the society committee members for their effort on the day, thanks to Rob Haste in Golf Galore for good discount on prizes, and finally thanks to the sponsors for great prizes.

I am now looking forward to a good golf summer with many society events to come., and I hope to see you all participating in different society events throughout the summer.
