BT v Legal & General, King's Hill Golf Club, 1/8/2005
This year the holiday season took its toll and BTRGS were only able to take
8 players down to Kent for the match where we were "away" to Legal
and General. We accepted the kind loan of a pair from L&G to even up the
numbers and set off for a great game of golf.
After driving through a few patches of rain on the way down we were relieved
to see the weather clear while we were still in the clubhouse and were able
to start in more promising conditions. The course itself is fairly new but was
in good condition and made use of the contours and woodland to give a mature
feel to the course. The rough was very punishing and best avoided - some hope!
The greens were in excellent condition, especially considering the rain that
had fallen beforehand and the shower torrential downpour which arrived mid way
through the round. The course also sported a couple of odd targets in the shape
of windsocks, harking back the West Malling airfield which used to be there.
Sadly for BTRGS, we met some opposition who were on-song and were well and truly
turned over. Our loan players acquitted themselves well by struggling back from
3 down to halve their match. Trevor and the captain of the day managed to come
in for the only BTRGS win, while the other three pairs were up against some
very strong opponents and didn't do quite so well, despite some fine play. The
commonest phrase in the bar afterwards seemed to be "I birdied the hole
and it was only for a half!". Stuart and Steve seemed to suffer particularly
with their opponents getting 9 birdies. Congratulations go to Graham Walker
for salvaging some pride by winning the Nearest the Pin prize.
The meal afterwards was well received with the strawberry, pineapple and rhubarb
crumble receiving a lot of comment!
I would like to thank everyone that supported this event and made it such a
good day. I look forward to next year's event where, as the home team, we will
have to raise our game to win the trophy back. There were suggestions from L&G
that we might extend the match to 36 holes to increase the ratio of golf to
travelling. Please feed your views on this back to the committee.
