2006 Autumn meeting
Date – 18th September 2006 Venue – Royal Norwich Golf Club Attendance – 4 Weather – Fine weather with a brief downpour for the early starters!
The autumn meeting this year was held on the Monday 18th September at Royal Norwich Golf Club. 41 players were competing: 42 players had registered to play but unfortunately Alistair Livesey had car problems which meant that he was unable to play on the day. We had two guests from St Clements Golf Club joining us plus 1 of our 2 sponsors. The Autumn Event was sponsored by Accenture and @Road. Richard Beecroft joined us from @Road but unfortunately Gavin Sermon from Accenture was unable to make it.
Royal Norwich unfortunately was not in the best of condition, the course had been closed for a week prior to our visit for them to start preparations for the winter and lots of these were still in evidence. Some of the fairways had suffered severely during the dry part of the summer and the greenkeepers were obviously trying to get some grass back on them for the winter. Unfortunately this meant that they were in a very poor condition for us. Despite this Royal Norwich still offered some challenging holes and the scoring indicates that most of the players found the course a test.
We started from both the 1st and 11th tees and with plenty of time allowed for the morning rounds all players found that they had time to relax and enjoy the lunch of chips and sandwiches. In fact some players had so much time to spare at lunch they wanted to go out earlier than arranged which meant that again the afternoon singles were not as originally planned, this did mean that all the golf was finished earlier in the day though.
In the evening we were served an excellent meal of steak pie followed by fruit crumble which went down very well. This was followed by the presentation of prizes for all the winners of the day and the overall winners from the Spring and Autumn meetings.
The scoring on the day was again very close in most of the competitions for the placings but with clear winners of each competition! The 4BBB competition saw Simon Mahoney and Steve Boswell coming in with an excellent score of 42 points to be 3 points clear of their nearest challengers. The prize for the winners was again a round of golf on the BT corporate membership at Wentworth. The singles low handicap competition was a run away victory for Andrew Wright with 40 points, leaving him 5 points clear of second place and also winning him the lowest gross prize with a round of 75 against the par of 72. Steve Hughes won the high handicap singles competition with a fantastic 43 points, 7 points clear of second place and higher than the winning 4BBB score in the morning. Longest drive was won by Simon Mahoney with a monster drive on the 17th that not many people got near to. John Carlaw won the closest to the pin competition on the 1st hole, which I am sure a few people complained about as it may have been their first shot of the day! Andrew Wright also won nearest the pin in two with a putt on the 318 yard 13th, a great drive to a difficult target.
The complete winners list is available at the end of this report.
I thoroughly enjoyed the day and hope that everyone else did as well. Thanks again to everyone for taking part and to Richard and Gavin for their sponsorship of the event which provided us with fantastic prizes. My thanks also go to the committee for their help with starting and particularly to Baard and Jon for their help with collating all the scores at the end of the day. Thanks also to Golf Galore for a good discount on prizes and to the BT Corporate Sponsorship team for letting me take advantage of the corporate membership at Wentworth.
I have really enjoyed my year as captain of your society and hope that you all continue to enjoy events and matches in coming years.
