BT v Legal and General

Date: 3rd August 2006 Venue: Boyce Hill Golf Club, Benfleet. http://www.boycehillgolfclub.co.uk/ Format: 4BBB Hambro scoring

BT were the home team for this year’s contest which was held at Boyce Hill golf club, perched on top of a hill in Benfleet in Essex. Having looked at the forecast, which was for showers, we were fortunate that we stayed dry but the strong wind certainly came into play with the high location of the course. The course itself was in good condition given the recent dry weather and the greens were running true. The course makes use of its location on a hill and most of the holes involved shots up or down a hill taken from sloping fairways. Many of the holes were doglegs just to add some space to the game. The 17th was a particularly notable hole with a blind shot over a “ravine”, half of which was out-of-bounds, onto a fairway for which you couldn’t even see the marker post from the tee. This was followed by a shot down to the green at the bottom of a hill.

BT were hoping for an improvement after being turned over in last year’s match and despite the L&G team being as strong as last year the BT pairs meshed very well and came in four holes up overall (two and a half to one and a half in matches) – a very creditable performance.

L&G salvaged some pride by winning both the longest drive prize (Chris Mutton) and the nearest the pin (Greer Calvert).

I’d like to extend my thanks to Alan Porter for stepping in at very late notice after Dave Bell injured himself when practicing for the match (showing how seriously we take the event!).
