BTRGS Match Report

BT v Ipswich Borough Council

Date: 7th June 2007 Venue: Rushmere Golf Club Format: 4BBB Match play Hambro scoring

An excellent days golf was had by all, the dismal weather forecast was completely wrong with the match being played in glorious June weather and despite recent rains the course still played hard and fast on fairways and greens alike.

Rushmere Golf club hosted the event which produced a few notable firsts. The club did us proud as per usual; the course played well, the food and hospitality was very good and the club were well organised meaning the event run smoothly.

The match was played in excellent spirits, all groups recalling stories of the great shots, what might have been etc over the club house drinks. All I can say is my pairing lost overall to a 30 foot chip in from the rough, local knowledge has it benefits and I am not bitter really. Apparently Pat has been a member for over 40 years at the club and this was not unusual (he did have another chip in but only from 10 yards just off the green that time !)

As for the notable firsts:-

1) BT have never lost this event over the 5 year history, as it can be seen from below the change from Alan Porter was too much for the temporary captain to cover and BT actually proceeded to lose. Normal service will resume when Alan returns I am sure.
2) Obviously related to above was Stephen Auld had never won as captain, this is his last year as captain as he is to retire from the borough in the next week or so, so a very fitting way to finish for an excellent character. A new captain is to be found although we should still see Stephen as a team member against us in the future. (Alan – same Thursday, same venue next year please, captain to be advised.)
3) Around a year ago Stephen Auld had a heart bypass transplant so was very pleased to be playing in the team. In all his years playing he has never won the longest drive…….. until this event. He did hit his best drive of the day on the 9th, and with the wilder crew finding sand or rough Stephen was triumphant much to the surprise of his team (and even our 4 ball). He was suitable given the chocolates and then posed for photo’s !!!

BT did win something on the night, at the deceptive 8th hole Jonathan Brown took home the chocolates when he won nearest the pin !.

I would like to thank my team for making our organising easy, and turning up well on time. The way we play is much more important than the result (when we lose anyway) and Stephen and his team certainly enjoyed the matches. My final thanks goes to Stephen for making that part of the match easy to organise (Alan also thanks for kicking it off), I wish him well in his retirement and the many golf days he is now to be invited too.
