Match Report
BTRGS Spring Meeting
Date: 14th May 2007 Venue: Eaton Golf Club Format: The usual 4BBB, Singles Stableford and Gross
It was a ‘guy dreich’ start to the day at Eaton and everyone was desperately hoping that it would not rain as heavily as it had been predicted. Those arriving early found themselves locked out of the club, as were all the staff due to a problem with the locks, but this was resolved. The administration staff and professional were also missing at the start of the day so several things were not sorted out as quickly as was needed e.g. the Nearest Pin markers etc.
However as the morning round progressed the rain held off and some good golf was played, most notably by our sponsor’s representative (and BTRGS member) Richard Beecroft and his partner Bob Mills, and Simon Mahoney and Steve Boswell (no surprises there then).
There were problems with the speed of play in the morning as the time to get round ranged from the first fourballs in 4 hours to some groups taking more that 4:45.. This appears to be because people were not always picking up when out of a hole or when their partner had got the points.
The afternoon stableford competitions were again closely fought. The Low Handicap winner being Jon Hopkins with 41 points and the High Handicap winner Rob Glassford with 37 points.
Overall Eaton Golf Club was in great shape, the greens were true and evenly paced (although I had enough problems on them). The wet start to May had kick-started the growth of the course following the extremely dry April weather. The course layout is testing, but even under the trees you always felt you had a chance to recover.
I think the value for money from the catering provided left a little to be desired with given the price charged. However the service was good and no-one went home hungry.
Thanks to Richard Beecroft for arranging for AtRoad to sponsor the event when the original sponsors dropped out with little notice.
Special thanks to Baard and Erik from their sterling efforts in translating scorecards into something that could be understood. I know they had some help from others, but they were the core of the team that pulled the results together.
