BTRGS Match Report

BT v Transco

Date: 19th July 2007 Venue: Benton Hall Golf Club Format: 4BBB Match Play-Hambro scoring

A wonderful day’s golf was had by all; the dismal wet weather of the week that far seemed to circle the course which left the match being played in good if overcast July weather. Despite the recent rains the course still played hard and fast on fairways and greens alike.

Benton proved to be a good test for all the range of handicaps across the teams. All the holes seem to have a unique aspect to it which needed a good set of tactics to be used alongside a good game for success at the hole. Whilst not the longest course the mixture of strategic placed man made hazards coupled with the natural contours, many water features and interesting tee and pin positions made this an excellent and rewarding challenge. John Carlaw was a founder member of the course, it opened in 18xx!!, he recalled tales of golfing feats past and gave the leading group the benefit of local knowledge. All agreed it was an excellent venue and good value for the additional miles. Overall the club did us proud, the organisation, food and hospitality was of a good standard, good golfing fare of coffee & bacon rolls to set us up for the game followed by Gammon and Chips, apparently the vegetarian option was also very good also.

However it is the people on both sides that make the match, I would like to thank both Dave’s Transco team and my own for an excellent match. As usual the matches played in excellent spirits especially over the club house drinks.

All but one of the matches when very close to the wire. As usual I am indebted to the team for making up for my generous nature of letting opposition teams narrowly beat my own pairing. I would like to thank my team for making our organising easy, and turning up well on time. My final thanks goes to Dave Giles for organising his team, getting them there early, playing in the right spirit and providing a prizes for the winning team, (I will save my Nike One balls for the return next year). Dave had previously donated the trophy; it still has only one winner – BTRGS at the moment, however on the day I believe we really had 24 winners from an excellent match. Chris Amor donated the Longest drive and Nearest the pin medals to provide some individual incentives.
